The Discovery

jpgOn a Saturday morning in April 2010 my friend and I were visiting garage sales in Las Vegas and generally having a laugh.

No one could have ever prepared me for the incredible journey I was about to experience.

We drove around the city searching for any sales that might be running. We have been to about ten and ended up at a gentleman’s house in North West Las Vegas. He was extremely amiable and was selling, amongst other things, some paintings and sketches. I have always had a keen interest in art and got chatting to the seller. We bought a few oil paintings and were negotiating a price. For an extra $5 I asked him to throw in a few sketches that were on a cabinet. He readily agreed.

During the time we were there he told me about his childhood and how he used to spend much of his time with Andy Warhol and how his Aunt and Andy’s mum were good friends. In fact, she often used to look after Andy whilst he was ill in bed when he was about 11 or 12.

As I had not studied the sketches, I had no idea about the signature on one of them. To be fair, they were in pretty bad shape and my friend and I just bundled them into the car along with the other paintings we bought.

A few days later, we were in his garage sorting through the sketches and I decided to remove one from it’s frame. Can you imagine my surprise when I noticed there was another picture behind the one I was removing. I immediately noticed the tell-tale red lips and the signature – ‘Andy Warhol’. As I remembered my conversation with the gentleman, my heart began racing.

I called my friend over and he was as intrigued as me. This was a case for the Andy Warhol Authentication Board.
